Mark secures Commons debate on relief road4.02.49pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 1st Jun 2006
Next Tuesday, Cheadle MP Mark Hunter will be leading a debate in the House of Commons on proposed plans for the SEMMMS/A555 relief road. Mark applied for the debate in Westminster Hall as he believes tackling road congestion to be one of the biggest issues facing our constituency. The debate means that time has been set aside to devote to the specific issue and a Minister will be obliged to respond to Mark's questions. The relief road (which includes completion MAELR, construction of a Poynton bypass and a new A6 Hazel Grove bypass) has been in the planning stages for many years and as decision day looms for the government over its funding arrangements for the scheme, Mark has taken the opportunity to lobby even harder in favour of the plans. On hearing the news that his debate had been selected, Mark said: "It's great that this debate has been chosen by the Speaker. I will be pressing the Minister for answers on some key issues associated with the road as well as emphasising once again how vital the scheme is for our area and the whole south Manchester and Cheshire region." "Local people have waited long enough for a road network fit for the 21st century. I will continue to do my best to make sure we get the right result on this".
