Local MP pays tribute to Campbell's Leadership

11.56.09am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 16th Oct 2007

Following the resignation of Liberal Democrat leader Ming Campbell last night, Cheadle MP Mark Hunter today paid tribute to his work as party leader.

"Ming Campbell is a man of immense stature in the world of politics and international affairs, and he has served the party as leader with great dignity and dedication. He has, however, come to the conclusion that the time is right to make way for a new leader who can take us forward into the next general election and beyond. As usual he has acted selflessly and put the party's interest before his own, but I believe personally that his decision is the right one.

On behalf of all Lib Dem supporters and members right across the Cheadle Constituency, I wish Ming and Elspeth the best of luck for the future and look forward to continuing to work alongside Ming in Parliament."
