Liberal Democrats are calling for investment in community policing and youth services in Cheadle, as new official figures show knife crime in England and Wales has risen to its highest level in a decade.
The Ministry of Justice statistics reveal that there were 1,133 knife crime offences in Greater Manchester in 2019 – the highest level in ten years.
This means that knife crime in the area has risen by 46% since 2015.
Responding to the figures, Liberal Democrat spokesperson Tom Morrison said:
“Far too many lives are being destroyed by the scourge of knife crime. The Conservatives’ approach to this has clearly failed.
“Liberal Democrats are calling for investment in the things that actually prevent crime, instead of wasting money trying to seem tough on crime.
“We need more community policing, more youth services and a proper public health approach to serious violence.”
