Yesterday's (Thursday 10th September) Cheadle and Gatley by-election was a victorious night for the Liberal Democrats and another major blow for the Conservatives.

In the hotly contested by-election for a seat on the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, Cllr Iain Roberts won by a very convincing 620 votes. Cllr Roberts secured 2625 votes (53% of the vote) while the Conservative candidate, only won 2005 votes (40%), the Labour party 143 votes (3% of vote), UKIP 96 votes (2%) and the Green party (2%).

Speaking after the results were announced Cheadle MP Mark Hunter said, ""I'm over the moon at such a decisive victory for Iain. Tonight's result shows very clearly the great support residents have for the excellent work our Councillors do for our area and I'm grateful to everyone who voted.

"Iain will be a fantastic Councillor - I know that he will work hard for the people of Cheadle and Gatley, represent them with dedication at the Town Hall and campaign tirelessly for our local area."

"My sincere congratulations go out to Iain and all the local Liberal Democrats. Everybody on the team worked incredibly hard and I was proud to play my part in the campaign."
