Last Saturday (7th February 2011) local MP Mark Hunter joined with dozens of local residents and members of staff from the Rainbow 88 restuarant in Cheadle Hulme and braved the rain to celebrate Chinese New Year 2011 - The Year of the Rabbit - and support local traders in the shopping centre.

As part of the celebrations, following Chinese custom, all those involved were encouraged to wear red for good luck over the New Year. Mr Hunter also released special red balloons into the sky with the help of local school children. An amazing Chinese Dragon Dance was also held in the Shopping Centre to celebrate the festivities.

Commenting, Mark Hunter MP said:

"Despite the dreary weather, this popular annual event yet again received an excellent response from the community, and the shopping centre was busy with local residents helping to welcome in the Chinese New Year whilst doing their shopping.

"I was delighted to be invited along to be part of the event which is always an important date in the local calendar. Children and adults alike enjoyed the entertainment and I congratulate all those involved.

"Full marks to Linda Lee and her team, and to all other local traders in Cheadle Hulme Shopping Centre for their excellent organisational work in setting up Saturday's wonderful event. Their contribution to the community is fantastic and reminds us all of the need to "shop local" whenever we can."
