Last Friday 13th May 2011 local MP Mark Hunter visited Shopmobility Stockport, the organisation which provides a range of scooters, wheelchairs and trained sighted guides for local people and visitors with mobility or visual impairments.

At the Shopmobility base on the second floor of Mersey way Car Park in Stockport Town Centre, Mr Hunter was able to see first-hand how people who own their own scooters can attain a "SUPA" (Scooter User, Proficiency Award) and was invited to take a test himself. Having accepted the challenge, the MP is now the proud owner of a proficiency award (see photo!).

During his visit Mr Hunter met John Leatherbarrow, Co-ordinator of the scheme and Janet Sutton, Chairperson of Shopmobility Stockport.

Following the visit, Shopmobility Co-ordinator John Leatherbarrow said:

"We were delighted to welcome Mark along to Shopmobility Stockport and we thank him for paying us a visit."

"Shopmobility Stockport has gone from strength to strength since its establishment in 1997, and membership continues to rise year on year. Anybody can join us - just call 0161 666 1100 for more information."

Commenting, Mark said:

"It was good to catch up with the latest news at Shopmobility Stockport, which is a fantastic local organisation and does such a good job on behalf of the local community.

"The dedicated team have made sure that the Shopmobility project here in Stockport has been well co-ordinated, meaning more people who need support can benefit from the service whenever they visit the town centre."
