Mark with the Olympic Torch

Local MP Mark Hunter has attended a special event in Westminster to welcome the news that the Olympic Torch will be heading to Stockport next summer.

As part of the Olympic Torch Relay leading up to the games in London, the Torch will travel down the A6 and into Stockport on Sunday 24th June 2012.

The announcement of the 1,018 villages, towns and cities on the route means the Olympic Flame will be within an hour's journey time of 95% of the population. In fact, over 95% of the population will be within just 10 miles of the Olympic Flame next summer. The street by street detail of the route will be confirmed next year.

Commenting, Mark said:

"Although the Olympic Games are taking place solely in London, I am pleased to see the Olympic Torch will travel through Stockport and so our town can play its own part in the 2012 Olympics.

"I know many people are excited by the prospect of the Games and the Olympic Torch passing through our area brings them even closer to home.

"Everyone across our area can start thinking about the ways that we will celebrate the Olympic Flame passing through the North West in a truly local way and to cheer on inspirational individuals from our communities that will carry the Olympic Torch and our hopes into the Games."
