Local Air Cadets visit Houses of ParliamentA group of Air Cadets from Cheadle recently visited the Houses of Parliament. They were invited by local Liberal Democrat MP, Mark Hunter, who visited the squadron last year for a landmark occasion. 284 (Cheadle & Gatley) Squadron were last year's local nominee for the Lees' inspection, a trophy awarded to the best and most successful squadron in the UK. Squadron Leader Sue Gossow, based at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, came to inspect the squadron and was impressed with what she saw. Mr Hunter was also in attendance supporting the work that the squadron does with local young people.

As a reward for their efforts cadets and staff were invited down to visit the Houses of Parliament, which took place just a few weeks ago. The cadets were shown around Westminster Hall and Central Lobby before being taken into the House of Commons. They were later taken through to the House of Lords to observe the last day of business for 2011. Having been met by Mr Hunter they were then treated to a 'backstage' tour of the House of Commons and an opportunity to ask a number of questions of their MP. Mr Hunter remarked 'It's always a pleasure to welcome visitors to Parliament from the constituency and I am delighted Cheadle Air Cadets were able to take up my invitation. They are an impressive group and the youngsters were a credit to their Unit and their community'.

Officer Commanding 284 Squadron, Flt Lt Paul Sutton, said 'I'm delighted that cadets from my squadron have had this unique opportunity. An understanding of citizenship and politics is important no matter what the future holds for them'.

The Air Cadet Organisation has over 40,000 members. Cadets between the ages of 13 and 20 take advantage of activities including flying, gliding, shooting, adventure training and sport as well as studying for BTEC and other vocational qualifications and the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award. 284 (Cheadle & Gatley) Squadron is based at The Paddock, Cheadle and parades on Mondays and Thursdays from 1900hrs - 2130hrs. If you're interested in becoming one of our cadets or volunteering as an adult member of staff please telephone the squadron during these times on 0161 2865729 or email oc.284@aircadets.org.
