Stockport becomes Portas Pilot!

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has congratulated the successful bid team at Stockport Council on becoming one of 12 towns in the UK to benefit from a new Coalition Government scheme to rejuvenate the town centre.

Stockport will be awarded a slice of £1.2 million and receive a tailored package of support from the Coalition Government and retail guru Mary Portas.

The project aims to help Stockport by "realising the character and potential of the Markets and Underbanks area with a creative arts complex, outdoor screenings, a new parking strategy and street champions."

Commenting, Mark said:

"I congratulate Stockport Council and the bid team on successfully becoming a "Portas Pilot".

"The number of empty shops in centres across the country is deeply concerning and, although footfall has improved quite a bit in Stockport since Primark has opened, it is vital the Council uses all the available resources to help local businesses through these tough times.

"Well done to all those involved!!"
