Mark is fighting for a High Speed Rail program that helps our areaLocal MP and High Speed Rail campaigner Mark Hunter has welcomed today's announcement on Phase 2 of High Speed Rail 2, as "great news for our area".

The move, which means that Manchester and Manchester Airport will get High Speed Rail connections to a number of UK cities, is set to benefit passengers and businesses across the area.

With an estimated 100,000 jobs to be created as a result of the scheme, the announcement has been welcomed by business leaders across the North West.

Commenting, Mark said:

"Today's announcement is good news for our local economy and good news for local passengers.

"As a former Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson, I made sure this was in the Party's manifesto at the general election and am delighted the Coalition Government has confirmed that our area will benefit from the new network.

"The next phase of High Speed 2 will reduce journey times between Manchester and London, and more importantly dramatically increase capacity - thus providing a much improved service for rail users.

"It will give us a transport system that is ready for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

"Not only will it bring growth to our area, by transferring millions of journeys to rail, it will help to reduce road congestion and take some of the pressure off many UK airports."
