Cheadle MP Mark Hunter today welcomed the newest Liberal Democrat MP, Mike Thornton, to Parliament after a sensational by-election win in Eastleigh, Hampshire, against the Conservatives.

Mark, who visited Eastleigh during the campaign, described the Lib Dem success as "an emphatic win which shows that Lib Dems in the Coalition Government are standing up for real people in tough economic times".

Like the Cheadle parliamentary constituency, Eastleigh was also a Lib Dem-Conservative marginal seat which the Lib Dems held with a majority of nearly 2,000 votes last week.

Commenting, Mark said:

"This is a great Lib Dem victory and the people of Eastleigh have elected a superb representative in Mike Thornton.

"The by-election was a real test of the Liberal Democrat performance in the Coalition Government, and I'm delighted that we were successful.

"Whether it's a £600 tax cut for people on low and middle incomes, a £12.50 increase in the state pension or a £2.5 billion investment in schools to help disadvantaged children, the Lib Dems are standing up for a fairer society and a stronger economy to help everyone get on in life.

"After the win on Thursday, I was contacted by a number of local members and supporters here in the Cheadle constituency to say just how pleased they were, and the lessons we can learn from the success in our area.

"Living in an area where it is a two-horse race between the Lib Dems and the Conservatives, I am sure we can learn from the "Eastleigh example" and build on our already strong local base."
