Local Cheadle MP, Mark Hunter, has added his personal congratulations to Liberal Democrat councillors at Stockport Town Hall, who were named on Saturday evening as winners of the "Council Group of the Year Award" at the Lib Dem Spring conference in York.

The announcement, made at a special event sponsored by the Local Government Association, recognises the achievements of the group who lead a minority administration (Liberal Democrat 29 councillors, Labour 21, Conservative 10, and Independent Ratepayers 3) which runs the local council in Stockport.

Party leader Nick Clegg was on hand to present the award and to help celebrate the group's success and wish them well in this year's council elections on May 22nd.

Leader of the Group, Cllr Sue Derbyshire, accepted the award on behalf of all the councillors and re-iterated her commitment to providing quality services, and value for money, for local council tax payers.

Commenting, Sue said:

'I am very proud to be the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group in Stockport and to have won this award for the second time after we won it back in 2003 when Mark was Leader. We all remain committed to working together for Stockport.'

Mark Hunter added:

'I am delighted to see the achievements of our hard working councillors and Town Hall team acknowledged in this way. This national recognition of their success is well deserved and I know will only make my colleagues even more determined to campaign hard and win again in May this year.'
