As well as securing resources to ensure our local NHS provides quality services for older people, I have also championed two national causes which struck a chord locally.
The No Nuisance Calls campaign was launched after many older constituents complained they were receiving frequent nuisance telephone calls. To tackle this, I launched a petition demanding action and presented it to 10 Downing Street. The Government is now taking steps to tighten regulations to reduce nuisance calls.
I initiated the Save the Cheque campaign when major high street banks announced plans to scrap cheque payment. I was one of the first MPs to pursue the issue in parliament in response to concerns from many older residents who continued to prefer to pay by cheque. Although sceptics said the banks wouldn’t listen, they eventually did a U-turn and scrapped plans to phase out cheque payment.
