Celebrating 40 Years of the Thursday Club in Bramhall

Today, I had the pleasure of visiting the Thursday Club at Bramhall Methodist Church to celebrate their incredible 40th anniversary. For four decades, this wonderful club ā founded by Churches Together ā has provided vital support to housebound and older residents in Bramhall, offering activities, social time, entertainment, hot meals, and of course, tea and cake every week.
I want to give a huge thank you to all the volunteers who make the Thursday Club such a special part of our local community. Your dedication, care, and generosity of time is truly inspiring. A very special mention goes to Carol Sargent, who has served the club for an astonishing 35 years ā your commitment is remarkable, and Bramhall is lucky to have you.
During my visit, I took part in a free-flowing Q&A with attendees, discussing issues that matter to our community here in Bramhall. Conversations included powercuts (Iām following up with Electricity North West), buses to Stepping Hill Hospital and Handforth Dean, car park charges at Bramhall Health Centre, and the impact of local developments. Many residents raised concerns about the Government forcing building projects in the area without properly considering whether they are the right developments for our community.
It was also a lovely experience to attend with my partner Lou and our little daughter Poppy ā who, I have to admit, made me the second most popular Morrison in the room!
The Thursday Club is a shining example of what community spirit can achieve. It has brought joy, support, and friendship to countless residents over 40 years. I am proud that this achievement has been recognised in Parliament through an Early Day Motion celebrating the club (which you can read below) and the incredible volunteers who make it possible. Bramhall is stronger because of your work.
