Statement from Tom Morrison MP on Heaton Park Synagogue Attack

Shocked and Heartbroken by the Attack on a Synagogue in North Manchester
I am deeply shocked and heartbroken by the news of the stabbing at a synagogue in North Manchester today. Tragically, two of the victims have now been confirmed to have died. This terrible act of violence comes on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, a day when Jewish people around the world come together in reflection, prayer, and repentance. To have such violence intrude into a place of worship is profoundly distressing.
My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the wider Jewish community in Manchester and across the region. No one should ever feel unsafe in a house of worship, and the courage and dignity of those affected today is both humbling and heartbreaking.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to the emergency services — the police, paramedics, and all frontline teams — who acted with bravery and professionalism this morning. Their rapid response undoubtedly prevented further harm, and they deserve our full thanks.
In Cheadle, we are committed to ensuring that our Jewish community is supported and protected. I have already been in contact with Greater Manchester Police and Stockport Council to ensure that local synagogues, including Yeshurun in Gatley, and Jewish schools, including North Cheshire Jewish School in Heald Green, have all the protection they need.
I will continue to do everything I can to support our Jewish community during this deeply troubling time. It is vital that we stand together, protect one another, and reaffirm that hatred and violence have no place in our society.
If anyone in the community needs assistance, guidance, or reassurance, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office. We will continue to work closely with the authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all.
In solidarity and support,
Tom Morrison MP
