Tom Morrison MP delivered a powerful speech in Westminster Hall, voicing deep concerns about the Government's decision to slash the UK's official development assistance from 0.5% to 0.3% of gross national income, the lowest level since 1999.

Speaking on behalf of constituents in Cheadle, Tom highlighted the stark human cost of these cuts. He cited alarming statistics showing that 2024 was one of the worst years on record for children in conflict, with almost 20% affected, double the figure from two decades ago. This year alone, 63 million children have experienced hunger due to violence-related food insecurity.

Tom emphasised that while strengthening UK defence is important, cutting overseas development assistance undermines Britain's soft power and creates a vacuum that Russia and China are eager to fill. He argued that international aid is not charity but an essential tool for preventing conflict, tackling poverty, and promoting global stability—all of which directly serve UK security interests.

The Cheadle MP drew attention to the devastating impact on the ground, particularly in Sudan where 638,000 people face famine conditions, in Gaza where unprecedented aid is needed following a fragile ceasefire, and in Yemen where nearly half the population suffers crisis-level food insecurity.

Tom also highlighted the deadly consequences for humanitarian workers themselves, noting that 2024 was the deadliest year on record for aid workers, with reduced budgets meaning fewer protections and less security for those risking their lives to help others.

Concluding with words from a Cheadle constituent, David, Tom stressed that strengthening defence should not come at the expense of international aid, calling the cuts "short-sighted and counter-productive". He urged Ministers to reaffirm the UK's commitment to being a beacon of conscience and compassion in global affairs.
