Tom Morrison MP Calls for Urgent Action in NHS Funding Crisis
Tom Morrison MP has joined forces with neighbouring Hazel Grove MP Lisa Smart to demand urgent clarity from the Government over a £3 billion black hole in NHS finances that threatens to devastate local healthcare services.
The Cheadle MP has written to both Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Chancellor Rachel Reeves expressing deep alarm at reports that £3 billion of NHS costs remain unfunded, with no agreement between government departments on how to cover extra expenses from strikes, redundancies and higher drug prices negotiated with the Trump administration.
The MPs are calling for guarantees that Stockport NHS Foundation Trust will not lose a single penny in funding as the winter months approach, when pressures on local services typically intensify.
Tom Morrison said: "As we head into the winter months, Stockport Foundation NHS Trust will be faced with spiralling waiting lists, delays getting an ambulance and overwhelmed A&E and GPs. The news of potential cuts to frontline services is the last thing patients in Cheadle will want to hear—everyone deserves care when they need it—and that can only happen with proper funding."
The intervention comes amid warnings from NHS Providers and NHS Confederation that the funding shortfall could force the NHS to cut back on treatments, worsen waiting lists, and ration care.
Both MPs have highlighted the dire state of Stepping Hill Hospital, which faces a reported £136 million backlog in repairs, with flooded corridors and fixtures falling from ceilings. They have invited the Health Secretary to visit the hospital to witness first-hand the scale of the crisis.
The MPs argue that local health services should not have to pay the price for government decisions to reorganise the NHS and agree higher pharmaceutical prices with US companies.
