We've Delivered the Petition to Downing Street — Now the Pressure Is On

Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering our community’s petition to 10 Downing Street — a petition signed by 6,123 local residents calling for urgent investment in Stepping Hill Hospital.
I was joined by Lisa Smart, MP for Hazel Grove, and Cllr Mark Roberts, the Leader of Stockport Council, to make sure the message from Stockport was loud and clear: our NHS is being let down, and we won’t stand for it.
For years, Stepping Hill has been suffering from chronic underinvestment. The hospital is currently facing a £134 million repair backlog, and parts of the site have already been condemned. I’ve heard from doctors and nurses working in flooded corridors, from women who gave birth under falling ceiling tiles, and from families worried about loved ones being treated in unsafe buildings. Despite these conditions, our NHS staff continue to deliver outstanding care — but they shouldn’t have to work in crumbling infrastructure.
To make matters worse, the local NHS Trust is now being told it must find £41 million in savings this year. That’s money being taken away from services when the system is already stretched to its limit.
This petition is about more than bricks and mortar. It’s about safety, dignity, and the future of healthcare in Stockport. That’s why I’m also pushing for a long-term plan — including a new, modern healthcare facility in central Stockport, located near the transport interchange, to ensure services can meet demand for decades to come.
The petition may have been delivered, but our work is far from over. I will continue pressing the Government in Parliament and meeting with Ministers until we get the investment our community deserves.
Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, shared it, and supported this campaign. Together, we’re making our voices heard.
